5 Sustainable Fabrics to Make Garments

DASFLOW'S MISSION

According to UCLA, sustainability is the balance between the environment, equity and economy. This practice is important to avoid the depletion of environmental resources to maintain healthy wildlife and habitat for current and upcoming generations.

Let’s talk about sustainability in business. Sustainability in business has two main focuses:

  • The effect business has on the environment

  • The effect business has on society

Companies implementing sustainable practices look to avoid environmental degradation, inequality, and social injustice. One example of sustainability in business is using sustainable materials in manufacturing. When it comes to apparel, the following five are the most sustainable fabrics:

  1. Recycled cotton

Made of post-industrial and post-consumer cotton waste reducing water and energy consumption. Recycled cotton, in comparison to conventional and organic, is the only cotton type supporting sustainability efforts.

  2. Organic Hemp

This sustainable fabric is made with the safe version of Cannabis Savita grown specifically for industrial or medical use. It is stronger, absorbent, durable, and insulating than cotton. Besides, the more you wash this fabric, the softer it gets.

  3. Recycle wool

A durable animal-based fabric known for its high quality and comfort, its recycled form is in high demand by manufacturers because of its versatility and flexibility. Manufacturers can mix it with other materials, such as fleece.

  4. ECONYL

This is an Italian-created material derived from recycled synthetic waste, such as waste fabric, that is the same quality as virgin nylon yarn but less harmful to the environment as it uses less water and generates less waste.

This is the preferred material for apparel that generally requires to be handwash only, like activewear and swimwear.

  5. Recycled Polyester

This type of fabric is PET, the chemical used to create polyester, made from plastic water bottles that have been broken down into fabrics. This fabric is the preferred one to use for garments like leggings and other stretchy garments. Recycled polyester is less environmentally harmful than virgin polyester.
